In a double overtime thriller, the Canton Warriors came up short to the Sayre Redskins in the District IV Class AA consolation game at Troy on Wednesday, February 26.
Canton held the lead early on after both the 1st and 2nd quarters, leading 8-7 after one and 22-15 at halftime. The Redskins made up ground in the 3rd by outscoring the Warriors 19-15 to cut the lead to three and trail 37-34. Sayre outscored Canton 12-9 in the 4th to come back and tie the game up and force overtime.
One four-minute overtime period wasn't enough to settle the 3rd place winner. With the game heading into its second overtime period Sayre outscored the Warriors 16-8 to keep their season alive and earn a berth in the PIAA State playoffs.
Isaiah Niemczyk led Canton, and all scorers, with 18 points on the evening and Zach Rentzel added 12. Caiden Williams finished with 8, Cooper Kitchen added 5, Ben Knapp and Joel Schoonover added 4 points each, and Reese Allen rounded out the scoring with 3 points.
The Warriors finish the season with a record of 13-13.
