MILTON - If anybody had any doubts how excited Canton's Lawrence Halbfoerster was after winning gold in the 3200 at the District IV Track and Field Championships, they should have been erased when he box jumped to the top of the podium to record his medal on Thursday.

"That was awesome," Halbfoerster said about taking first. "It was absolutely amazing."

Halbfoerster (9:23.98) went from third to first on the final lap to edge out Northwest's Michael Fritz (9:26.17) for the win.

It was a tight pack for the first mile with up to seven runners hugging each other tight.

"It was kind of frustrating because I couldn't get to the position where I wanted to be," explained Halbfoerster. "I was boxed in, and I was scared of getting spiked the whole time."

Fritz then took a small lead in the fifth lap which started to break the pack apart. Halbfoerster wasn't worried as he planned for this to happen.

"As long as he was 10 to 15 meters ahead of me that's where I wanted to be," he explained.

At the start of the seventh lap Towanda's Emmett Klees made a strong move into second with Halbfoerster hanging with him.

That tug was all Lawrence needed to get into gear.

"He gave me confidence to get up to first," said Halbfoerster.

On the bell lap Halbfoerster passed him on the first turn, then caught, and passed, Fritz on the back stretch before holding him off down the final 100.

"I thought he was going to kick sooner, so it just played out how I wanted," Halbfoerster said.

Many times runners will catch up to the leader and stay on their shoulder but Halbfoerster was going to leave it all out in the final 250 meters.

"I just gave it my all," he said. "I came in as hard as I could. I didn't know where anyone was behind me, I didn't look back."

That time puts him in a good spot to medal at the PIAA Championships next weekend.

"I'm just keeping a positive mindset that I can do hard things," said Halbfoerster.

Wyatt Hilton (42-feet, 2-inches) was 12th in the shot put while John Whitehead (20.98) took 22nd in the 110 hurdle preliminaries.
