MILTON - Canton's Alexis McRoberts made a statement in the discus at the District IV Track and Field Championships Thursday. The senior broke the district record with a toss of 140-feet, 1-inch to claim gold in the event.
“It's a great feeling to go out here and throw well," McRoberts said. "We still have states to go and were going to keep the mentality that I had today."
It was a bit of redemption after just missing the state qualifying mark last season. Now she’s the new record holder.
"It's definitely a great feeling to know that I have the record now, but I've just got to keep pushing, and keep working," said McRoberts.
This year she cleared the state mark by 10-feet in her first throw, taking first at 130-feet, 10-inches.
"That definitely did help me relax, but I knew I had more," remarked McRoberts. "I knew I had to hit my spots, and it washing to be fine, and that's what happened."
Her second throw in the finals was the big one, but she finished the day with four of her six throws over 130-feet.
"I'm definitely going to keep this mentality going into states," McRoberts said. "Keep hitting my spots, and just making sure that I am where I want to be at when I get to states, but really just focusing on the mental aspect of just getting out there and throwing Thebes I possibly can."
McRoberts will be throwing in the shot put on Saturday, and is the favorite there. Last year she needed to hit the state mark to punch her ticket to Shippensburg after coming up short in the discus, taking a lot of pressure into the second day.
This year McRoberts has one spot in the bag.
"It's definitely a great feeling, but I still want to make it in shot," she said.
Teammate Kendall Petrowski (97-feet, 4-inches) was 13th, while in the 100 preliminaries Davian Crowley just missed the finals by one-one hundredth of a second, taking ninth in 13.02.
